OBC or No OBC?
I have an 03 cc ds with 04 electrical including obc that I installed because the 03 was flooded with saltwater before I bought it.
I will be in the market to buy a new 48v charger soon but not sure if I should get a smart charger 17A and bypass the obc or take my chances with the unknown obc. I am not certain if the 04 obc even works. I have read quite a bit on chargers and the thought of bypassing the OBC, however I'm still not sure which way to go. Can someone give me there thoughts and possibly the positives and negatives of bypassing the obc? I guess worst case I could buy a new obc if it turns out that mine doesn't work if it's best to stick with the obc. I do want to stick with the round 3pin and I'm not too worried about the safety interlock feature. I have enough discipline to ensure that it is unplugged before taking off. Your help and thoughts are greatly appreciated!!!!! |

Re: OBC or No OBC?
The OBC is the control board for the OEM charger.
You can get the new charger with a it's own circuit board. In some cases these new chargers have 5 stage algorithms (charging phases that make up the charge cycle) as compared to the OBC 3 phase algorithm. If you get a 'dumb' charger you are just getting a new transformer and relay. |

Thanks Scottyb. So you suggest going with a new smart charger and bypassing the obc? Please forgive my ignorance in the realm of electrical systems. I am more mechanically apt although I do want to learn the electrical side of my cart.
Provided that I do bypass the obc for charging is there any reason or benefit to leaving it connected for other features? Then, how would I go about successfully changing the wiring to bypass the obc? OBTW- I will be placing my order for a digital dash volt meter from you as soon as I get charger and batteries. I'm on a leash at the moment so it might be a little bit. |

Re: OBC or No OBC?
I went with the smart charger dpi and left the obc as is. I think i read where scottyb says dpi is going away with smart charger bypassing the obc. He can correct me if im wrong. If thats true im glad i got mine before hand. I couldnt justify the ~169$ for a charging control box when 300$ got me the smart charger.

I got the 17a. The one I purchased did not have the selector switch where you choose your battery mfr. I just plug it in and let it go.

Epb, Excellent. Did you get it from one of the site sponsors? Do you mind telling me where? I've seen some 17a still out there on eBay and amazon, but would buy from a sponsor if price is relatively close.

Re: OBC or No OBC?
Sponsors sell chargers I just don't know if they have the 17. I looked around to find what was right for me.
