Default 1995 DS - hitting rev limiter

Figured I’d check in with this group before I went and tried to tear anything apart.

I’ve been running my 95 DS with a zip tie at the governor for years. Not ever a problem. All of a sudden I’m hitting my rev limiter. Kinda strange. So first I look under the cart and make sure I didn’t have a stick make the cable do something funny. Then I cut the zip tie but even with the zip tie cut I’m still hitting the rev limiter and have kind of a jumpy throttle.

What gives? Where do I need to start?

By jumpy throttle I mean it’s going wide open barely hitting the accelerator. And backfires

I'd start by checking the cable running from the governor to the carb snd see if it is sticking, kinked, frayed, or any other signs of damage.

You might want to check to see if your throttle plate in the carburetor is broken or missing completely,
It's pretty common for the age of your cart.

As usual Lockman...you were spot on. So I have to assume this is my problem seeing how everything else appears to be normal. Question though...where did the other half go? Do I need to be concerned about it?

Am I ordering a new carb? Or just the throttle plate? The entire assembly is extremely loose. Not sure what kind of tolerances these things are supposed to have.

Yeah... the other half might get stuck at the intake valve,
but, most I've heard of get beyond that and get chewed up in the cylinder!
and believe it or not? most engines swallow it up like it's nothing, but some engines don't!

Throttle plates alone aren't available from what I recall,
buying a new carb is the easiest... preferably OEM if you can afford it!

It's a tough call... either run it with a new carb? (Like I did with the one in the pic)
or take the head off and see if you can find it.

The choice is yours.

Wow good job lockman

Cant imagine that would play nice with the piston!

If you've got a magnet you might be able to fish it into the port behind the carb. It's not that long to where the valve is. Save pulling off the head anyway

I think I'm going to put on a new carb and roll the dice. I've been looking for an excuse to buy the big block from Vegas Carts. :)

New carb in and it runs like a champ.

Question about carb adjustments. The new carb came adjusted exactly like my old one (which I’ve never messed with). Blend screw was 2 turns out and air screw was all the way in. Is that normal for the air screw? I assume so but just checking.
