G1 Drive belt
I have an 83 Gas g1. I put on a new belt and clutch spring to help the gearing and love the improvements. I think that tht new belt seems to short. I didnt keep the old belt so i can not reference it. from what i found online is that the belt should measure 36 3/8 in on the out side. the belt i have is this size.
The problem i have is that the belt is tight when not running.. to the point that i can not even push the cart becasue its trying to turn over the motor. the other thing is that i winds up the RPM before it pops into gear and then spils my drink on me, barks the tires and the front tires come off the ground about 3in. This was cool at first but now is getting old. I just broke all 4 motor mounts. it looks like the belt is too short and the it takes too many RPM's to get it to slide over and get pinched between the clutch on the motor. Do i have the wrong belt? |

Re: G1 Drive belt
That is the correct belt size for your cart.
I would say the drive clutch is sticking and needs a good cleaning so it engages smoothly. I have always been impressed how smooth the Yamaha clutches were compared to Ezgo or Club Car. |

Re: G1 Drive belt
There is also a tensioner under the left side of the muffler that keeps the motor from being pulled back into the clutch allowing for smoother clutch operation and way less movement by the motor mounts. Made a difference on my cart, its nice and smooth now and has quicker acceleration.

Re: G1 Drive belt
Ok guys, no tension on this G1. I am confidnet that i need a longer belt. Is the 83 maybe have some parts from the ODD 1982?
I wish i had my old belt to compare them. |

Re: G1 Drive belt
The tensioner is item number 15 in the rear shocks parts diagram, follow the lines for the damper and adjusting nut numbers. Look carefully at the frame under the left side of the muffler and you will see the brackets. Its kind of hard to find, took me a while to see where it should go as mine was missing when i got the cart. The adjustment specs are in the owners manual which can be downloaded from yamahagolfcars.com. The parts diagrams are there as well. You might want to inspect the clutch, badly worn parts can delay the engagement until higher rpms are reached. Did you replace the spring as original or as a performance part? The performance spring also needs a higher rpm before it engages.
