Question Would you spend the money?

1986 series cart that I am considering converting to a 72V system. I'm assuming that it would be 6-8V under the seat and 2-12v in the bag well. I just know its going to cost me close to $3,000 or more to do. I have to convert it to a solid state system which is $850 plus new cables which is another $250. Then I have to get a new battery charger, $285. (all the above prices are from scottyb's website. Then new batteries = $1200-1500. All that on a 36V motor. Have to add in a PQ Motor, $225 on the cheap end or upgrade to a 48V motor. I'm just not sure its worth it to sink that kind of money into a 1986 cart. Sounds like ALOT of fun. What to do, what to do. I'm so confused.

Fleagt,
You only live once and you can't take it with you. If I was doing this cart build I would want a newer cart/body. You can find some cheap 2000+ DS'S out there. If you got a welder and the skills why can't you reconfigure cut and weld a new rack that holds 6ea 12v.

I don't have a welder and I don't have the skills to weld.

there is a few people running 72 volts on a stock motor. get a temperature gauge for the motor so you can keep an eye on it. I would not mix different batteries keep all 12 or all 8 volts.

Didn't even think of making the all 12v. "Smacks forehead"!! Are these just basic deep cell batteries? How would I charge 72V with 6-12v batteries?

Mixing various voltage batteries within the pack is not recommended. It's too hard to keep them balanced without making a major science project out of everyday use & recharging. The stock motor is not going to last real long on 72v.

Less that 1% of all the carts on BGW are running 72v or more. It's going to cost more than you think. The stock ( or refurbished stock motor) is not going to last long on 72v. Everything costs more for 72 than 48v
72v charger
72v controller
72v motor

When complete it will go faster than it can safely handle. Now you need to upgrade suspension and brakes. 48v is enough for most people. The other 1% are going to learn a whole lot more about DC electric and finance

Okay then. To build a 48V cart I still need to do the solid state conversion, cables and batteries. All toll, around $2,000. I wish I could slowly piece it together so it is not a heavy hit to the wallet. Might take out a small loan and make this happen.

I also say stick with 48V.... For the amounts you are talking about, I like the idea mentioned earlier of going with a 2000+ DS and then tricking it out......
Best wishes.
