Default charging battery

at what point (rpm) does the generator begin to charge the battery? seem like if I drive at slowler speeds it drains the battery

That's a good question! I suspect there probably is an RPM where above it generation (current into the battery) will begin, and below it the battery will continue to feed into the starter generator. You would need to monitor current in the starter/generator line to verify this RPM. You would also be able to check it by measuring the battery voltage while running. Generation into the battery would start at the time the battery voltage just started to increase. Hope this helps. Maybe someone knows for sure. - RAY

Golf cart generators charge at a fairly low rpm, full rpm not needed for charging to start. I'd guess 3000 rpm for peak power just from experience. I'm sure there's a spec in a service manual.

Having recently been testing mine (bad regulator) and finding out when & where it's charging - pretty much if you are moving the cart - you have a small charge going increasing with RPMs to full capacity as noted above.

You should see 13+V when you have enough rpms for the clutch to engage. If you are seeing lower than 13V, IMO - you have an issue with the charging circuit (regulator or ground, generator connection in that order of suspects).

12.6 - 12.9 - while technically higher than battery voltage - just isn't charging.

Yep. It's not unusual for a cart to not charge at low RPM, especially when components age. That's why generator testing should be done at mid range or better RPM.
