Understanding Regen
I am thinking about installing an Altrax XCT400 speed controller in my cart for two different reasons. The first is simple go faster! The second is to help stop my cart..... Yes I know that sounds odd.
My current setup is an 07 CC Precedent with a 6" lift, 23" tires, and all stock electronics but something has been done such as a speed code because it goes 19mph and does not regen. This is great except when you come up to stop signs and try stopping the thing. Since I have a All Sports 6" lift I was going to have to take the Jakes' hydraulic brake setup and weld the caliper brackets to my front spindles to make it all work (read about it in another post). So instead of spending that money on brakes I am thinking about spending it towards a speed controller that I can customize the regen on. Questions about regen: When a cart does regen I know it helps slow down the cart but: When a cart is in regen mode does it draw power from the batteries? Or When a cart is in regen mode does it put power back into the batteries? Or When a cart is in regen mode does it have no affect on the batteries? Thanks in advance! |

You most like have a speed magnet as the speed code 4 would retain Regen.
The Regenerative Brake puts energy back into the battery pack, but in practicality is not enough to make a difference. I live at the end of a small down sloped road and my Precedent battery pack easily gets to 60v when I Regen brake at the end of the road. I imagine those small but frequent battery spikes are good for the batteries. I understand the XCT controller does a good Regen brake now, and the controller software will allow You to set Your sensor to "4 Poles" if you have a speed magnet in your motor. |

Thanks for the reply Sergio.
I don't think my cart has a speed magnet but how can I be sure of this? I have read some forums about speed magnets but nothing about how to tell if your cart has one or not. |

The stock magnet will generate 4 pulses (each pulse goes from 0v to 5v) for each motor revolution. The speed magnet will generate 2 pulse (each pulse goes from 0v to 5v) for each motor revolution. If You set Your meter to 20vDC and measure the voltage on the Green wire that goes to the speed sensor (You need to use a wire insulation piercing probe), You can see the voltage go from 0v to 5v with each pulse. Now that we know how it works, The procedure is: Lift one wheel off the ground.You don't have to be to precise (within 2 pulses) to be in the ballpark of the magnets as the counts are very different. |

Anyone with an IQDM programmer can disable the "Pedal Up Brake" on the Precedent IQ.
If the "Pedal Up brake" is disabled, the controller will not engage the Regen brake at pedal Up as long as the speed is below the Speed Code setting programmed in the controller. |

Serigo, thanks once again for this information.
I got it figured out because of your knowledge once again. A couple notes of what I did. I did not have a piercing probe so I traced the green wire back from the speed sensor into the speed controller wiring harness. At that point the probe on my mulitmeter was able to easily be pushed down into the harness next to the green wire. I still think a piercing probe would be good to have in the toolbox. When I was trying to count the pulses I was trying to do so by using the accelerator. After 5 minutes of frustration I realized I could just spin the wheel by hand inch by inch and count the pulses that way. MUCH easier . Turns out I do have a stock magnet I counted 12 pulses exactly on a 1/2 rotation with one wheel off of the ground. Thanks for the help |

Serigo, one last question. Since I have figured out that my cart most likely has a modification done and it is a speed code. I was wondering when a speed code is done to a cart does it modify the OBC or does it modify the stock speed controller? I would assume it modifys the speed controller but that is truly an 100% assumption, I have no real facts to back it up.

The Speed code sets the rpm limit before the Controller engages the Regen brake to prevent the motor from rotating any faster.
It is possible that someone set the "Pedal Up brake" setting on the controller to OFF or to a lower intensity as it is an adjustable setting. The Regen brake effect on the IQ carts was not that good, the Excel Controller Regen brake is greatly improved as are the ones on the after market controllers that offer it. The speed You are getting is about right for a standard speed code 3 and 23" tires. You can use the "Speed calculator" located in the "Quick Links" drop down (next to the Logout link) to estimate the speed: What is the motor/engine rpm at full throttle? 3300 |
