Struggling uphill
I recently purchased an electric 89 club car. It is a 36v. It has decent speed on flat ground but struggles or stops when trying to drive it uphill. Three of the batteries were purchased this year and 3 are one year old. The charger appears to be from 89, buzzes quite a lot and creates a sulfur smell. I was told that the charger would shut off automatically when the batteries are fully charge. Last time I connected it, it ran for more than 5 hours and it didn't shut off. Should it take that long? Is the cart struggling to make it uphill because the batteries aren't charging or should I be concerned about the motor?

Re: Struggling uphill
I tried that but it didn't seem to make a difference. There is still a significant drop in power when going uphill.

Re: Struggling uphill
Electric carts do slow under load. Especially effected are the series drive carts, they don't stop but they do slow.
Any battery condition issue will exaggerate the slowing as available amperage decreases. Can you post the voltages for the 6 batteries you have about 12 hours after a charge? |

Re: Struggling uphill
This definitely sounds like a battery power problem. Buzzing and sulphur smell while charging is normal, and it may take longer than 5 hours.

Re: Struggling uphill
Each battery is in the 6.3 to 6.5 volt range. Combined the 6 read just over 39 volts when standing still. When trying to go uphill it drops to 33 volts. I took the older batteries to an auto part store to get tested and they said they were good. If I do need to upgrade the motor, do you have any suggestions? Should I be looking for one with higher torque?

Re: Struggling uphill
Well, those battery numbers sound good, maybe look into upgrades now (conversion kit, motor, controller, etc.) This is a real slooooow developing thread........

Re: Struggling uphill
Yeah, I had the cart locked up for the winter. Finally able to take it out without geting it covered in road salt.
