Solenoids and Motor Test? Need help.
Early/mid 80's G1 Electric
How do we test the forward/reverse solenoids? *I get 8.9v to the small terminal(s) to the left side of the solenoids *The left solenoid is for forward *The right solenoid is for reverse Should power flow through to the hot side/large terminal when energized? *Power does not flow through to the large terminal (either one) *Are they bad? How do we test the electric motor? *I followed the wires to the motor/from the solenoids and put power to the motor directly. Should it turn? *How much voltage does it take to turn the motor? Will lower voltage turn the motor slower? Thanks for any help. I'm a newb when it comes to electric carts..... |

Can't help you on the wizardry that is the G1 FNR, but here's a diagram of how to test a series motor that I filched from Scottyb.

Re: Solenoids and Motor Test? Need help.
Thanks 93! I tried my best guess on getting it to turn, but no go. That diagram pretty much shows what I did. I used jumper cables though.
I am thinking there isn't enough voltage. 3 of the 6 batteries are frozen solid right now. But 3 batteries show 6.1 volts each. I used these 3 batteries to jump directly to the motor, which is 18.3 volts, thinking that should have moved the motor? Wonder if I need to disconnect all the wiring from the motor and try it. Is there something grounding out the system? |

Re: Solenoids and Motor Test? Need help.
the car belongs to a friend of mine and he complained of a spark on his brake cable to the frame. so of course I was testing everything to make sure there were no shorts or open circuits etc etc etc. and never owning or working on an electric golf cart before this took me a long time I had to read up on the circuitry and do a lot of poking around.
in the end I found the tail light circuit was grounding to the frame and causing a short and in turn the frame had power and was touching a warm spot on the brake cable and was also sparking there. and it had bad batteries. lol I ended up using 3 deep cycle batteries that I had for my camper and my work trailer and substituted them for the six 6 volt batteries and it works great. is there any problem with using 3 12 volt batteries deep cycle style instead of six 6 volt deep cycle batteries? |

It wont hurt anything but the 3 batteries. Even 3 T-1275 golf cart 12v's were not designed for 36v applications. It will work just fine, till the batteries are toast.

Re: Solenoids and Motor Test? Need help.
Thanks guys. My friend is going to wait until Rural King has the 6v batteries on sale for like $59 each. I told him "Good luck with that" LOL. I'm sure a $59 battery can't be that great. Whatever, I did my job!!!
