If it makes you feel any better, the solenoid dropping after it engaged probably meant the controller power circuit was already bad.

You have to be very careful if You ever tow the cart to put the switch on Tow or the controller Field circuit will fry.

The symptoms would be similar to what you described, the controller does not sense field current and disengages the solenoid.

One other thing, You never answer the questions about the diode, that is important because if You don't have one You could damage the new controller.

Your new solenoid may have a built in diode across the coil, if it does, the coil terminals will have polarity markings ( + and - ) that must be observed.

If not, You need to add a 1amp diode, IN4007 available at radioshack if the solenoid is 200amps or less.

The super duty solenoids should use a 3amp diode.

The diode side with a stripe gets connected to the same terminal as the light blue wire (positive side).

new solenoid did not come with a diode
yes put resistor back on top, but took it off after the arch to retest and same result

the new solenoid does have 2 liitle screws on each little terminal right below where wires connect

ordered me a 400amp Alltrax (DCX400IQ) 48v programmable controller
200 amp HD solenoid kit
