Got it slightly open. Looks like this cart sat idle for awhile and was submerged at some point. Peeking in I can see copious amounts of rust. Sprayed some PB catalyst in there and going to let it sit overnight. Any other suggestions appreciated. Thx

I would pop the hatch and pull it apart. Sounds like a complete rebuild, at least bearings and seals, will be needed. You may be looking at needing to scotch brite to clean out any surface rust or even bead blast things if it is too bad then assess the damage to the gears.

I would be looking for another axle assembly, might even save money in the long run.

Gears are hardened steel. Unless it has sat for a long time with no lubricant than they may be useable. Take it apart, clean it up and post some pics.

I'm no rear axle guru but I've rebuilt a lot of gear boxes over the years in water plants. Sometimes it can be nasty but cheaper if you do the work.

I split the pumpkin open very carefully. The rust was everywhere and the parts "stuck" in place. I soaked it in PB Blaster for a bit and this evening they are taking a bath. Going to try and loosen them up with hydrolysis passing electric current through the tub. Hopefully it will be in better shape in the morning
