Default how does a charger know if a charge is complete?

Like the title says...how does it know?

I charged my batteries for a few hours yesterday. It got the 80% light but not the full charge light. Each battery shows 8.5 to 8.6 and a bank voltage of 51.3. Those are readings after letting the charger off for about 5 hours.

Thoughts?

Chargers for FLA batteries all work on the pack voltage. They charge until the pack is at the full charge voltage - and then they over charge a bit to balance the pack.

I kinda thought it did something special at the end...i unplugged it because I was going to bed. Just didn't trust it completely.

I put it back on charge this morning and, probably while I was asking my question, it finished.

Thanks for the info guys.

Sounds like you have the MAC "SCR481717" 48v charger. On page 6/7 of SCR.PDF, the theory of operation is explained. Yamaha has used 4 different chargers for 48v applications, they all determine when the batteries are done in the same fashion.
