Default Powerdrive 3 Model 26580 charger gets hot

I very recently got a new (to me) 2010 48v Club Car. The charger, a Powerdrive 3, Model 26580, gets hot when charging. The cord at the plug seems pretty warm but the charger itself get hot enough I have to let it cool down a bit before I can move it bare handed very far.
Is this normal?

My PowerDrive 3 charger does not do that. It puts some heat but never gets hot to the touch.

Thanks for the reply yensidecamper. From what I am reading it's apparently not uncommon for them to get hot when you let the buggy batteries drain to the point of not running. So my next question is, about how long does it take for one to charge up from near zero?

The PD3 does get pretty darn hot. I'm not sure if any of mine have ever been too hot to touch, but I'm not typically moving chargers while they're still on.
If it has run for 4-5 hours at 15+ amps that is about the hottest it should get and it should star to cool down some as the amps get lower towards the middle and end of the charge cycle. Make sure all of the openings in the case are clear of dirt, dust, spider webs etc to ensure it gets airflow.

A cart that's run to the point of shutoff, might take 20-24 hours to fully recharge. The OBC in the cart is supposed to time out around 16 hours, but that does not necessarily mean the pack is fully re-charged.

When I bought my cart the batteries had about 70-75% of capacity left. It took 6-8 hours for the charger to shut off. I never let them get below 25% so I don't know what completely dead charge times would look like. My charger did put of some heat but I could always move it by the handle and wasn't hot enough to be uncomfortable. I didn't move it often so I may have not ever realized just how hot it got.

I just changed over to lithium so I have a PD3 charger and OBC I am going to post for sale soon if you decide you need one PM me.

When I used my powerDrive 3 I had an old fan that automatically came ON anytime the charger was running and OFF after the charging was complete.

It kept the charger cool no matter how long it ran or how hot it was outside.

Something like this surge protector with "controlled" outlets:
