Default Best time to water batteries?

I know you are supposed to add water to batteries after they are fully charged. But does that mean fully charged and immediately after you unplug the charger? Or after fully charged and then unplugged and at rest for 12-24 hours? Probably a stupid question. But after seeing so many stories on here about battery explosions and broken noses I can't help but ask.

I wouldn't do it if they were still gassing, but other than that, any time after they are fully charged.

Always wear a face shield or at least safety glasses and have plenty of water nearby to rinse off any splashed acid.

Ok. Thanks. So definitely don't add water if I can smell/hear them gassing?

Smell is probably okay, but hearing it gassing no.

In the overall scheme of things, it probably doesn't matter if it is gassing since there is always a collection of hydrogen gas above the electrolyte anyways. Just do it in a well ventilated area and keep ignition sources away.

I usually lift the seat before I fill the dispense I use to top off the batteries with and if there is a fan handy, I aim it to blow across the battery pack.

In a nutshell, you cannot eliminate the risk. All you can do is minimize it and prepare for the worst by protecting your eyes and exposed skin.
