First step: Do a compression test. What are your readings?

There are no points on the G1. You have two possibilities here, either you are very low on compression or the idle/slow speed passageways in the carb are blocked. AS GMB stated do the compression test with throttle wide open. If the compression test is ok then have a look at the carb, first making sure your basic adjustment settings are correct and if there is no improvement you will need to clean the carb with carb cleaner. You will have to remove the carb, totally dismantle and clean/soak everything in carb cleaner. If your compression test indicates low compression then a motor rebuild will be required.

With a new top end you should get a reading around 125. 1982 motors would be lower... somewhere around 95.
