Default Crazy screetching while stopped....

'97 CC DS, drive clutch spring upgrade, key on ignition, idles below clutch engagement point.

While sitting still in F/N/R there is a screech coming from the engine compartment. As soon as the clutch engages it goes away. Everyting works fine and motor sounds normal and happy.

Could it be the roller in the drive clutch as the clutch spins and the belt doesnt? If so, how to fix it?

Any other thoughts? It's super loud and causes people to turn and look at me like I'm killing a cat...

Can you hold the belt out of the way and spin that bearing with your finger and hear the screeching? It does sound like that's probably the issue.

Kind of what I was thinking... I'll check it this weekend. Is there a fix? Replacement bearings? Lubricate them?

Thanks!

Yes let others know what you found, and did you check the starter belt, sounds like it might be bad/old or loose

I'm gonna guess that LCK got the idler bearing... Tom's description of the symptom is an exact match!

http://www.cartpartsplus.com/drive-clutch-idler-brg

And note LCK: DO NOT lube anything in/on the drive clutch! CC clutches were designed to run dry,
Lubing any parts on a CC drive clutch will collect dust and debris, and cause premature failure!

Yes, only used a little graphite dry lube on the little sliding things when I did the spring upgrade..

Here is the part: http://www.cartpartsplus.com/accessories

I'll be ordering it ASAP and I'll let ya know how it goes.

Thanks

WOW. What a difference!

I put in the new idler bearing and while I was at it I replaced the little slider buttons. I took some emery cloth and smoothed out the 'grooves' on the other half of the clutch shell where the sliders contact. Then put some dry graphite lube on the shaft and all the sliding surfaces and then reassembled everything.

Now the clutch doesn't squeal and screetch at idle and it engages soooooo smooth. Before it would practically throw the dog out of the bed when getting started.
