How much does it cost to replace the axle?

Wont fail faster just because its lifted. Totally stock ones crapped out in too high numbers. Anyone on this forum who is at a yamaha dealership can attest to that. One gear in there was crap, any other color "tag" is better. If you have a "white tag" axle, it will fail in the same way given time. Yamaha sent people out to get oil samples from failed "white tag" axles to find out what was up. Their offical answer was "new models have a new design, indicated by a yellow sticker on the axle" (blue and green stickers were even newer, but still just fine) that was the answer we got "offically" from them. They were "mum" on that problem, we opened them up, the one bad gear was worn "razor sharp" on the teeth, if not stripped off. I'm not making this up, these were stock axles, no "funny stuff", no high speed gears or anything else "non-stock".

First, Yery noisey, followed by poor braking performance, followed by stripped gear teeth and lack of movement and horrible sounds.

What kind of repair cost would I be looking at? Also is it a DIY type job or no?

A new complete axle is around $1k, individual parts are less, but keep in mind metal shavings have circulated through every part. Easy diy to swap axle, disassembly is pretty easy too.

Are any special tools needed? Is there a manual or a how to video that you're aware of? I am just trying to be prepared for the inevitable.

14mm, 13mm, 17mm, 10mm is pretty much it to remove axle from cart. Half inch socket, allen sockets if you need to remove brake frictions, and snap-ring pliers is pretty much it to disassemble axle.
