Default Up in a puff of Smoke!

Hi all,
I am new to the forum.. I have been a lurker for some time and I have a few questions...

I have a old ( i believe its is a 1992 ) ez go cart that I got a while back. I have managed to get 5 of the 6 batteries back to life with a battery desulfation charger. The cart would take up pretty jerky after a fresh charge then it quit altogether. I pulled the controller cover and the resistor was too hot to touch when the batteries are hooked up. I went through all the wiring and everything is in order.. then as I was troubleshooting a crackling sound and a puff of smoke from the controller...
So is a new ( or rebuilt ) controller in my future?

Thanks for any input!
