Default Club Car (FE350) hesitation problem (Carb)

Hello Everyone,

I'm new to the golf cart scene and stumbled onto this website. I'm hoping for a little guidance.

I purchased a Club Car Gas cart with the Kawasaki FE350and it has a problem during operation. It will start up great (with a little choke) and take off like a demon. After about 5 seconds of running it will "nose over" like you are hitting the brakes. At that point you have to keep the accelerator at mid position to keep the golf cart moving smoothly (without the stop and go motion). I decided to dive in today and begin some diagnostic/maintenance work so I pulled the carb off for cleaning (assuming that'd be a good place to start). The first question I have concerns the air jet on the outside/top of the carburetor. I'm assuming it's an air jet (marked 45) but air doesn't pass through (it appears to be clogged). I've tried soaking and blowing compressed air through but nothing seems to work. Is this a common problem and would that be a good place to start?

Would you have any other suggestions on what I should look at?

Thanks in advance.

John

I recently picked up a pair of Villager 8's (I'm new to the gas cart scene as well)...

One works exactly like yours (takes off quickly, falls on its face at top speed, but will maintain top speed with about 3/4 throttle)

The other is smoother off the line and will run smooth all day with the throttle pinned, however, it's noticably slower than the other

I have a feeling cart#1 has the governor removed, but I can't say for sure (still new to these things)

I've heard about the governor and how sensitive it can be. It's possible it may need to be adjusted.

Anyone else?

Welcome to BGW tatuus!

Help me out here a little... you say after 5 seconds it "noses over",
does this happen when your only at full throttle / full speed?
and, is it like the engine is shutting down then firing back up?

If it is... your Rev Limiter is kicking in! (which means your govenor has been adjusted!)

There are 2 ways to fix this:
Readjust your govenor to a lower RPM (@ 3800)
or...
Disconnect your Rev Limiter ground. (Only w/max RPM's @ 4400 for an FE350)

That goes for you too 98SE!
(Cart 1# w/stripper pole... )

Thanks Don!

The description you gave is exactly what happens.

Question: How do I disconnect the ground wire (where is it) and is it better to disconnect or readjust the governor?

Thank you again.

There is a box on the front of your engine... just above the oil drain plug,
there is a wire that goes to the left bolt, remove the bolt, and the eye loop from the bolt,
and reinstall the bolt, and tape up the eyelet so it won't ground, and just let it hang!
your rev limiter has been disabled!

Now... you need to check the RPM's...
set up a car tach, and make sure it won't rev higher then 4400 RPM's
(your valves will start to "float" and this will cause damage to your engine!)

If it revs higher then 4400... you'll have to readjust your govenor!

BTW... 4400 RPM's is for FE350's only!
FE290's need to be around 4200 RPM's max!

Happy carting!

Hi Don,

Thanks again for the feedback. I haven't looked for the ground wire (I'm assuming it's black) but I did see a yellow with a quick disconnect fitting in that general area that had already been disconnected. Obviously it wasn't the rev limiter so what wire would that have been?

Thanks.

Don,

I have successfully disconnected the REV limiter (the hesitation is gone) and will attach a tiny tach to it to see where the RPM is. I do have a question concerning the governor. How does one adjust the governor to keep it under the 4400 RPM? I've looked at the pivot arm (I've got some ideas) but it seems like there'd be a lot of minute adjustments.

Thanks for you help.

Your on the right track!

but, I didn't adjust my govenor... I Zip Tied the spring!

The clamp on the cable bracket is where you adjust it!
turning the shaft in small 1/16th increments... either way will speed it up or slow it down!
