G16 RPM question. What's the danger zone?
I just bypassed the governor on my 98 G16. I added a digital tach but I'm not sure its giving me correct info. I set it to 1cyl/4 stroke. Going 18\19 mph its about 4000 RPM. Does that sound right? Also what is the danger zone at the cart will not run a top speed of 25 mph?

You probably need to set your tach for 2 cylinders. Most single cylinder 4 stroke engines also fire at the top of the exhaust stroke. It actually fires twice per revolution. At 4000 rpm the engine would really be screaming.

Re: G16 RPM question. What's the danger zone?
Thanks Dan. It’s running what I call very normal at 4000 RPMs. I will look at the settings on the Tach and adjust to see the difference. Assuming I get that right, what’s the high rev end for this cart?

Re: G16 RPM question. What's the danger zone?
I believe I misstated the way that works. A 2 cylinder engine will fire once per revolution (every other cylinder). A single cylinder only needs to fire once every 2 revolutions. Since your engine is firing (making a spark at the top of the exhaust stroke) every revolution your tach thinks it is seeing a 1 cylinder engine turning at twice the actual speed. The tach needs to be set so that is seeing a 2 cylinder engine.
I don't know what that engine is rated at but I don't think I would run it faster than 3600 rpm. Someone with more experience with that engine needs to chime in with a high speed recommendation. |

Re: G16 RPM question. What's the danger zone?
So set it up like a 2 cyl 4 stroke?

Re: G16 RPM question. What's the danger zone?
I used to run my G 14 up to 4700 rpms which was around 24 mph. So the G 16 is geared a little higher so your 4000 rpms sound correct for the speed. The G14 was rated at a maximum of 5000 rpms. Obviously running high rpms shortens engine life to some degree but yamahas are a sturdy lot. Certainly Plowmmans a sponsor here can make it faster and safer yet at revs.
