Default Melted Battery Posts on NEW 12v Batteries

Long story short, my neighbor bought 4 new US 12v batteries for his RXV. When tightening the last cable down, his ratchet bumped the battery hold down support bar and knocked the ratchet out of his hand. It touched one terminal, landed on another terminal on a different battery and melted fast. He panicked and knocked the ratchet away with a wooden 2x4. All his brand new two gauge cables went up in flames. Anywho, the two batteries with melted terminals still had great voltage and no other batteries showed any signs of damage.

My question is, since these batteries are $180 each, is it possible to drill any type of self tapping post into the flat spot beside the old terminal? I'd love to be able to re-use these as spares for one of my other carts, or a solar set up for lights in an outbuilding.

I tried to attach an image but I dont know if I did it correctly.

That's unfortunate for your neighbor, but the good news is that the posts can be repaired. See here: http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/batte...nal-repair.php

Wooo that's the exact information I was looking for. Thanks JakeSnake.

If done correctly, will I be able to use these batteries in a golf cart? My Precedent has 4yr old Deka Farm batteries and I'd love to replace them withe some good GC batteries.

My neighbor was going to exchange these batteries as cores for new ones but I told him to hang on to them. It would be great if I could get a few years out of them.

Oh yeah, those are GC batteries, you could use them. Does your Precedent have the four 12v battery configuration?

Yes it has 4 12s. I thought about converting to 6 8v, but I think that would require a new tray. Plus, I just bought 6 8v for my TXT PDS.. The precedent is just a spare that I keep at my parents.

Perfect, you can just drop them in and go.

jakesnake27 posted a great repair thread for battery posts.

Here is another repair thread that you might want to read through to pick up some more tips for the repair. The comments on the "F" size drill bit was interesting. And the discussion on stainless steel vs. galvanized.
