A motor will draw what it needs, right up to the point it melts the insulation on the windings. A better question might be how much can it take (not draw), and even that's not easily answerable. Most motors (transformers, etc.) can be SEVERLY overloaded as long as temperatures are monitored. |

With a 400A controller, it will draw a maximum of 400A. With a 650A controller, it will draw a maximum of 650A. |

Re: should i upgrade???
How much of a difference will i see going from a non programable 400 amp fleet controller
To a 650 axe? i guess what in asking is it worth it? My batterys are 2 weeks old but for some reason it has 4 gauge cables going from the controller to the motor and has 6 gauge for the batterys so i will be upgrading to 2 gauge for everything |

1.b. For a person with and electrical engineering background, it is a pulse width modulator. 2. Controller are not 100% efficient and the more current (amps) they pass, the more their temperature rises. They are designed to pass the peak amp rating for at least two minutes without going into thermal overload or burning out. The one hour rating is what they can safely pass for prolonged periods of time. The motor in a stock cart draws about 50A cruising on hard level surface. With oversize tires (23" vs 18"), the amps will be higher at cruise. However, with a higher pack voltage (48V vs 36V), the amps will be lower. Max amps are only drawn during hard acceleration, climbing steep hills or similar heavy loading situations and those conditions typically don't last anywhere near the two minute peak rating time. 3. You are asking questions, so you are heading in the right direction. |
