Default Speed controller melts

I have an 85 electric ezgo. Recently I replaced the speed controller, it ran for about a day then it started acting funny, jerky, loss of power... Once home I took a look and the speed controller device had melted not the board but the other part of the controller. What would cause this?

Please post pics. We like - and can often help determine the cause - of "melted" stuff.

1985 Ezgo is a resistor coil cart. No controller. Just a speed selector board with a wiper arm and a few resistors make it go.

This system is quickly overwhelmed when the cart is modified or used for something other than original golf....

We use it at the beach. Is there something we can do to fix the problem?

Can you describe what the speed selector board looks like... Does it have 5 copper discs on it?

You can replace the speed wiper board and wiper contact and keep it out of the sand and be aware of not over-loading it. This will help.

Others have modified the contr0ller conversion kit (1987-1991) to fit the earlier carts. This is a complete replacement of the drive system electronics, basically converting to solid state speed control.

You can read more about the kits and the why and hows here. http://cartsunlimited.net/Scottyb_s_Conversion_Kit.html

I took the contact board off and cleaned and resurfaced all the contacts. I know all the wiring connections needs to be clean and tight, and 4 gauge wire. Should I apply dielectric grease on the wire connections?

What are the symptoms of a bad solenoid, I have replaced the resistor coil set with a new one.
Thanks
