exhaust problems g1
I have a 1979 Yamaha g1 gas cart. I was driving it the other day. I drove about 2 miles and it started cutting out on me. So I stopped checked the fuel, it was good the muffler was smoking pretty good and had a different smell like oil or something. It only does it on long runs. Is time for a new muffler? Or time for a muffler BBQ ?

Re: exhaust problems g1
How's the oil level? Pull the spark plug for a look, is it dry and light or wet and black -carbon buildup?

The plug is dry and white. I mixed it at 50:1. I just rebuilt the motor in it.

Running too much oil in the gas will cause all that smoking you are describing. |

Re: exhaust problems g1
I used to just run them hard when they start smoking, its doing a BBQ inside there for sure. After 20 min it usually stop smoking and you know its empty. They really stink though, but should not do it again for some time. I would hold stock cart on the floor and hold the brakes to keep speed down and carb open (with governor) lol, they would smoke a cloud that would cover a house or two. I'd keep rodding on it until it stopped smoking. Then I'd drive around mellow and let it cool down before I stopped as the muffler got pretty hot.

Re: exhaust problems g1
Hello - I recently bought an older G1 for camping use. Had some issues with it but I think most of them are resolved.
One thing I noticed, I am missing the linkage from the exhaust to the throttle. I have seen on here where it wont "hurt" the cart to not have it but also read that it helps quite them down and run better with the back pressure at lower RPMS As you can imagine at the camp ground all we do is "put" around it so I feel for my use I need this part. Q1 - Does anyone know where to buy this maybe used? Q2 - Has anyone ever had to "rig" something in order for that butterfly flap to move? I have looked I don't even see these parts online for sale as most are obsolete new from Yamaha. Any help will greatly appreciated! thanks! |
