Default E-Z-GO Express L6 72V vs Elite 3.0

Looking at moving from a Yamaha G-16 gas cart to a new 6 seat E-Z-Go electric cart. Need more space for the family but, don't want to lose any performance. I see the 72V has a 22HP motor vs. the Elite with a 13HP and the Elite weighs about 280lbs less than the 72V. Are the weight savings worth losing about 9HP? Can the same mods be done to the Elite so it has the same performance as the 72V? Thanks.

Unfortunately not. The new Elite design suffers from a voltage problem, right from the factory. It has a 72V motor, yet comes with a 51.2V nominal Lithium battery pack. The controller must pour more current to the fields to maintain rotor lock at the lower voltage, resulting in motor overheat issues rather quickly. There are a number of other issues resulting from shortcuts taken in the VCL (Vehicle Control Language) programming specific to that new version of Elite. It can be reworked, but a compromise must be reached to reduce the stock motor overheating issue. We have to reduce the accel rate a bit in order to cut back on the field current, and balance that in the mapping for higher speed. It has the ability to reach higher speeds, but the motor is already getting hot with the stock settings. So we must limit the top end to reduce the overheat issue. 4 MPH less than the max of 31 MPH is about the limit that should be used with that configuration.

Thanks Bob. Sounds like the 72V L6 is the way to go. I will move forward with the 2020 Express L6 72V. Once I have the cart I will definitely be interested in your services to reprogram the controller. I am in the NE GA area so, hopefully we can work out something soon. Thanks.

Did you end up getting the 72V L6? If so, were you able to get it reprogrammed?

I was about to pull the trigger on L6 Elite until I discovered this thread (Thank You Mr. Bob Boyce!). Now considering the 72V (need 4 forward facing seats so pretty much set on L6/S6).

I have a S4 72V that Bob reprogrammed mine a year or so ago and it's bad@$$.

The only thing with these carts is aftermarket parts seem to be kind of limited so you have to use your imagination a little. For example I was looking to put a clay basket on mine but couldn't find one. I ended up getting one for a txt and it didn't fit but I was able to make some little brackets to raise it off the body a half inch or so and now it fits perfectly.

Good to know, I am taking delivery of an L6/72V next week and hoping at some point to be able to get it reprogrammed. I know it is limited to under 18mph until then, which will be frustrating if I cannot.
