Re: Winter storm watch!!!!
1/4" of ice here with a couple of inches of sleet on top of that last night and early this morning. True blizzard conditions right now. Wind 20 to 30 and snow fall rates of up to 4" per hour says the local weather man. We are so very thankful that we have a nice warm, safe and dry place to live!!!
We had 2" of ice here in January of '09 which crippled the entire area with some people not having electricity for weeks. While Cheryl and I sat by the fireplace in the dark we formed the "We will never be without these things ever again" list and went and got everything on the list the second the weather permitted us to go so we now have plenty of lamp oil, a phone that doesn't need electricity to work and the 6kw generator complete with all the right cords and such. Those are on stand by now. We have a septic system that has a lift pump so no power = no flush. Lessons learned back in '09 will not be soon forgotten. I have the generator on the back patio with the cord already ran to the lift pump electrical box just in case. Praying for those that are in the midst of the storm. Everyone stay safe and warm!! t |

Re: Winter storm watch!!!!
Sunny & 14 here this morning. Nothing but cold in our forecast.
The wife is planning a party on the beach this Friday night. Bon fire, some warm drink, and some skating on the ice. |

Re: Winter storm watch!!!!
Bring it on!
My daughter's friend Adam wrote the following and sent it to all his friends and family: All, I'm writing this in case we don't come through the next 48 hours to 3 weeks alive (I’ve heard varying forecasted lengths for this storm). Based on the magnitude of the terror-level weather warnings I've been receiving since Thursday of last week for the threatening Blizzard (to start, possibly, on Wednesday night - a full 6 days of fear and hysteria inducing weather updates) I felt compelled to get in touch with loved ones and I encourage you to do the same. I truley have enjoyed your company and cherished your friendships over the years. My understanding is that, starting tomorrow with no likely end in sight, we will be hit with 19 feet to 36 miles of snow. Additionally, the lake shore will flood, ranging from approximately 30 feet to 11 miles inland, due to 25-to-170 MPH wind gusts that will create Tsunami level waves, the tops of which will freeze into 1-to-15 foot, razor-sharp ice spears that upon impact into buildings and pavement will likely level the majority of Lake Michigan’s coast. I will be heading to Costco after work to purchase enough water, Swiss Miss hot chocolate packets, and frozen pizza's to sustain a family of 6 for half a year in an attempt to ensure my wife's, dog's and my survival. I haven't determined the quantity of shovels I am going to purchase yet, but my understanding is this snow will actually be 3 times heavier, by volume, then normal snow. I'm assuming I will need a single shovel for every two feet of snow that falls (at least 8 shovels), as the weight and acidic level of the snow will break down, and destroy its use (yes, this will be acid-snow, similar to the acid-rain that we were warned about in grade school that was to destroy all human-made structures). Please keep in mind, once the heavens and the sea have ceased their attack, the snow on the ground will blind you if you look directly at it and all surfaces will be covered with black-ice, undetectable to the human eye and impossible to stand on without falling and cracking your skull or drive on without crashing, with your car immediately bursting into flame (which, unfortunately as it turns out with the severity of the weather we are going to be dealing with, will have no ability to melt the snow or ice). Sunglasses will be useless, as the suns reflection off this particular snow will result in gamma rays that will melt down the frames and lenses and destroy your retina. Do not trust your thermostat either! It will not take into account the wind-chill factor, which due to the hellscape we will be living in after this storm, will now have the ability to permeate walls. It will be -10 degrees farenheight inside your house and there is nothing you can do about it. In fact, you might as well turn off your heater tonight to at lease save on your energy bill. No less than 6 layers of clothing will be necessary in-doors and out. The logical and measured response to these pending threats is to not go to work for the next several weeks. It would be logical to conclude, considering the circumstances, that any institution that attempts to discipline or terminate an employee due to attendance issues associated with this particular genocide-type-snow-storm will be in violation of several regulatory codes that are being put into place as we speak. I believe this is one area we can all agree on that the government should become immediately involved in, as it would be highly unjust to expect a people who will be physically and emotionally devastated after this snowrape-storm to have to continue to fulfill their responsibilities at work. In fact, a stay on paying any 2010 federal or state tax should possibly be considered as we the people of the Chicagoland area will need to reconstruct society from scratch once the snow has destroyed our civilization. So, I wish you all the best of luck. I have substantial doubt of anyone's ability to survive and I would like to thank all of our local and national media outlets for hammering this belief into my skull. Peace be with you. PS - I believe it goes without saying, but if you don't have a living will in order, I would make sure that gets taken care of by high-noon, tomorrow. Consider naming only those individuals living in the southern states beneficiaries, as they will possibly survive this blizzard. |
