I first tried my cable on a desktop computer with a com port running Windows 7. Worked fine first time. I then made a second cable for a friend. He had a laptop running Windows 7 but no com port. I then bought a USB-Serial cable to connect to the controller. At first it did not want to work what ever I tried. The cable uses a prolific driver that came with it. I loaded the win 7 version. After all else failed I went on the net and looked for a old driver because the cable worked on win XP. I found a old version and installed it on the Win 7 laptop and
it worked.

Seems to me the problems people are having is not with the interface but with their USB-Serial cables and/or the driver for it.

The cheap Ebay USB - SERIAL lead that I linked to back in this thread uses a WinChipHead CH341/CH340 chip ...and doesn't appear to have the same compatibility problems.
