Default Need help understanding a tapered shaft adapter

I am building a "buggy" to use around the neighborhood. I have a Yamaha G14 frame but no body.

I installed a Predator 212 (6.5 HP). I installed a CVT torque converter and it runs okay. I want to try the "Primary clutch/secondary clutch" set-up.

The engine has a 3/4" straight shaft. The primary clutch has a 1.18" tapered bore.

I ordered this adapter: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B085D8FGNB...roduct_details

Here is my question. The adapter did not come with a "key". The tapered bore in the clutch does not have a "key slot". Shouldn't there be a key on the straight engine shaft? Does pressure/torque hold the clutch on the tapered shaft?

The "key slot" in the engine shaft is 3/16". If the adapter takes a key it would need to be much smaller.

Thanks for any help.

The taper is intended to hold by friction, no key required The trick is that the tapered adapter has to stay at the very end of the non-tapered shaft, usually by way of a spacer.

It came with a spacer. But I don't understand how it won't slip around the straight engine shaft.

So...I should install the spacer, install the tapered adapter, slide the clutch on and tighten down the bolt? No key needed?

Correct. Tapered drive clutches don't use a keyway.

What did the directions say? Or was it one of those China kits with no paperwork?

Post some pics of the parts you're dealing with, might help.

This is the adapter I purchased:

It came with no instructions.

Actual photos of your parts might help. But it looks as if they are providing a slot for your key on the crankshaft to fit into.

But i dont think the clutch is slotted anyway. Maybe i am wrong but i would assume the clutch taper would clamp the adapter nice and tight.

Edit! Now i see what you mean Slonomo, the key might hold the adapter and the taper would snug the clutch.

BUT would a key keep the adapter from tightening up evenly around the taper ?
