Default ezgo light wiring question

I purchased one of the recessed light kits a while back and installed no problem. I recently purchased a new dash and radio and decided to add a new rocker switch with led light. The old switch had 2 wires red and green. The new rocker switch takes three wires power ground and whatever your hooking to(lights). I wired everything up like i thought would work with the green being ground.....wrong. anyway to make a long story short the only way i could make work was wire the green to the switch and leave the red disconnected. Everything works as it should, just want to make sure this is correct. Thanks

It is incorrect. The switch wants a +12v coming in and a +12v (load) going to the lights. The lights get grounded to a -12v terminal. The third wire on the switch also grounds to a -12v terminal. This allows the switch to make/break the positive wire, and allows the LED in the switch to operate correctly.

Get it?

He is correct! The third prong is for the led light on the rocker itself but does have to wired up the way gman said!

I hope i gotcha lol. I've got a seperate 12v battery wires ran to+ and- on battery. the the green wire from the original switch is wired to new switch is the only way i can get it to work properly. This will not work? If not what should i hook red wire too? Im a descent mechanic and fabricator but an idiot at electrical lol.

Run a wire from +12v of the battery to 12v terminal on the switch.
Run a wire from LOAD terminal of the switch to both of the positive wires of the lights.
Run a wire from -12 of the battery to both the GROUND terminal on the switch AND both of the negative wires of the lights.

Done.
