Default 1979 EZGO moter test?

I have picked up in 1979 ezgo marathon electric. I have a two-stroke but electric is new to me. The cart has sat idle with no batteries for who knows how long. I have temporarily hooked up 3-12 V batteries to make the 36 V. I would just like to see if the motor works before I spend any money on good batteries. Is there a way to test just the motor to see if it spins or not? And any other advice I could get would be much appreciated.

Only do this if the motor is connected to the cart's rear-end. I wouldn't recommend "bench testing" a golf cart motor, as only one of the two necessary bearings is in the motor itself.

After you test the motor, I would seriously suggest going over your wiring! Hose clamps are not acceptable connectors!

I tested the motor according to the diagram. I got sparks like i was arcing the battery pos to neg. Does this mean a bad motor or did I wire it wrong?
