New Wheels/Tires-Now I have a Steering Problem
I have a 97 Club Car DS with a 500 amp controller, High Speed Motor, etc and I changed out my 11 x 22 x 8 mud tires for a set of 22" Sahara like tires with 12" wheels. My speed increased from 23 to 27 MPH! The problem is that the steering is a little scary at full speed. It now feels like I have 2-3" of play in the steering and I am not sure why. It drive much smoother and much quieter. I check the underneath and I am not sure what to look for.
Any help would be appreciated. It now feels a little unsafe at 27 mph. What can I do to "stiffen" up the steering. Thanks!! |

Is it kinda driving from one side of the road to the other? Check the toe ( front and back of tire at hub level). It should be 1/8" toe in( fronts closer than the backs)

Yes it is driving like that but why would it just start with brand new tries and wheels? 1/8" is not a lot to measure. How do you do that to get an accurate measurement?
Thanks |

Re: New Wheels/Tires-Now I have a Steering Problem
I know that but I how do you line up the wheels to get a 1/8" measurement and how do you adjust the toe in or out?
Also, how do I adjust my steering wheel? It is not lined up properly. Do you adjust loosen the large nut the holds the steering wheel. What size is that nut? I have quite a few socket sets but nothing that big and I don't want to go out and buy a socket if that won't solve the steering wheel adjustment. Sorry for all of the questions. |

Also sounds as if your tires may be over-aired. If they are, they're running on just the center of the tread, which can cause darty handling if the front tires are over-aired. Check the air pressure in the tires in addition to measuring toe-in.

Re: New Wheels/Tires-Now I have a Steering Problem
Did it do this with the old tires? I installed a lift kit on my cart and it does the same thing with the larger tires. I noticed that with my lift kit I can push on the front of my tire while jacked up and they will actually move backwards. seems like I need some kind of stabilizer rods mounted so that the wheels will be more stable..Kindo of scary when you hit a bump in the road running 23 mph

Re: New Wheels/Tires-Now I have a Steering Problem
The nut on there is a 15/16s. Once you get the nut off you may have a little trouble getting the wheel off. But you could do what I did. unscrew the nut but not all the way. Bring the top of the nut to the top of the shaft. Next put your foot up on the dash and your knee under the wheel so you can push on the bottom of the wheel with your knee. Take a hammer and hit the nut and shaft while pulling with your other hand and pushing with your knee. Don't hit the nut so hard you want to kill it. my wheel came right off after a few good hits. You keep the nut on there so you won't damage the threads on the shaft. once you see the wheel moving take the nut off all the way.
