Have you checked the battery voltage while charging? Capacitors that blow up like that in other electronic applications have been subject to over voltage or reverse polarity.

This is really driving me nuts. Whats causing the caps to blow?

How was it driving before the caps took a dump? (why do they need so many capacitors in the controller anyway?)

Is your pre-charge resistor still good?

WHY DID IT DIE?
Sometimes s**t happens with no explanation. I figure a 7 year old controller on a modified cart that is used daily is a "any day now" component.

Besides, I'm looking forward to new technology in the SPM

Ordered everything from Scottyb today. Should be here Thursday! Thanks Scotty!

I have a question for JohnnieB, what would the specs be for my motor (in sig) on 48 volts? I understand that horsepower and rpms increase, but what are the numbers for the raptor?

If you are at 36v now, 48v wil get you 33% increase in speed (rpms) and power.

I can't even get the specs on my own motor, much less anyone else's.

In general terms, horsepower is the product of Volts times Amps divided by 745.699872, but horsepower alone isn't all that good of a yardstick for estimating motor performance. Torque vs RPM is what you want to now.

Basically two motors can have the same HP rating and one can have a lot of low end torque and not much speed, while the other has very little low end torque, but high speed.

Fortunately, if you just change the voltage being applied to a motor, the Voltage/HP/Torque/RPM/Amp relationships are fairly linear. Going from 36V to 48V is a 33.3% increase in voltage, so the other numbers increase by a 1/3 also, give or take a few percentage points.

Your 6.1HP motor will have about 9HP on 48V.

I exploded the armature in a sepex motor at 7600RPM, so be careful.

My figures show 4600 @36v, so 6188 @ 48v.

The motor tag says 5330@36 volts

My guess is both the 4600 RPM and 5330 RPM came from dynamometer testing, but I have no idea of the significance of either.

If you know your tire diameter (Measured - the size printed on tires is approximate at best) and your max speed, I can tell you what the motor RPM is at that speed. Then you can estimate what it will increase to when(if) you go to 48V.

You most likely won't reach that number since there are some other factors involved, but it will be close.
