So why would horizontal mounting be preferred on some solenoids? I mounted mine vertical thinking there would be less mechanical wear, like vert. vs horiz. pistons

Make sure we are all in the same page: "Horizontal" vs "Vertical" mounting refers to the orientation of the coil/plunger, not the contacts.
So what was described in the first post is actually a "Horizontal" mounting, where the big posts are north/south or up/down.
The orientation preference is probably a combination of gravity, the weight of the moving assemblies and the force required to either make or break the connection.

That's what I thought was happening, gravity was taking over every time I hit a bump. Turns out it was just loosing 48 volts all together. But after thinking about it I wonder if I should mount it the other way. But I mounted it the way I did Because the lack of space I had to work with.
