Default '96 g16 any luck cleaning up crankshaft after broken rod?

My son wire tied governor and must have over revved downhill and blew the motor. The rod is in many pieces. Anyone had any luck cleaning up the crankshaft rod bearing surface? Block is good, no holes and cylinder wall is good.

Muriatic acid will remove any aluminum on the journal. Use a green scotchbrite pad. If you still see black on it, it still has traces of aluminum on it.

Simply soak then scrub? How long of a soak in acid?

My G16 had an exploded rod as well. I sanded the rod journal for 3 hours then I took it to an automotive machine shop and had them polish the journal. It cost me $35 but it was worth it. It looks almost brand new when he was done. I dropped it off and picked it up the same day...didn't take long at all.

This was before I sanded it. I should've took some pictures after I got it back from the shop. it had a mirror finish to it.

Soak, scrub, soak, scrub, soak, scrub till you see no more black residue come off of it. Get some rubber gloves too. Muriatic acid isn't too volatile but may affect your hands. Shouldn't take very long to do. Key is seeing no more black. Any black you see is aluminum.

So I used Lye on the journal. First I made a paste and used an acid brush to apply the paste. The paste crystallized pretty quickly on the journal. I then used the brush to apply droplets of water to the paste. This worked pretty good and ate most of the aluminum off the journal. I then made a solution with Lye and soaked the crank overnight. The next day I flushed the crank with water and soap then sprayed wd-40 to prevent rust. A few days later I used dollar general oven cleaner to get any remaining aluminum off. Some 400 grit cut into strips, wd-40 and a shoe string has brought the journal back to a nice shine. Next is a little compound to complete the polish. I will try to post pics tomorrow.
