Default Re: '96 g16 any luck cleaning up crankshaft after broken rod?

I was pleased how it turned out and it specs out as well. I did hit it with 600 then compound followed by polish. All with my wife's shoe strings. Now if I only had a camshaft I could finish the rebuild. After washing it today I found a tooth missing. Maybe a blessing in disguise as I was careful handling it. It must have been damaged from the rod breakage. I am ISO a stock g16 cam.

Why is it that when the rod breaks it always seems to take out the camshaft. I feel like I just went thru this same problem. I ended up ordering a camshaft from a company called boats.net. sounds crazy but they had the best price on a brand new OEM Yamaha crankshaft. Here's the link. I usually try to order from site sponsors but even ebay couldn't compete with this price. You just have to be willing to wait a week to 2 weeks for it to arrive. They order direct from the manufacturer and then ship it to you after they receive it.

Mine snapped in 2.

Anyone have advise on how to install the rings on the piston? Sounds easy but the oil ring (second from top) broke while expanding for install. I will be checking local for a standard set of rings Friday.

thats how i cheat on vanguards buying "broken rod junk crank" and then clean them up and check the balance i have not had one yet that was twisted . emory cloth and oven cleaner turn it into a 20 minute job, i use the abrasive side to take off the aluminum , then oven cleaner to get the residue and then the cloth side to polish them up , just becareful of the fumes
