Ok, it does look easier to just repair the box. But I was wondering if the new style is better, tighter, more durable etc.

As for the "flanged bearing in the steering assy." Do you mean the large gold bushing in the pivot arm? Or the one at the bottom of the column shaft above the pinon?

Yes
However
If you don't mind cutting up that part of the frame and welding it back together so it works with the new stuff then its not a problem at all.

The pre-2001 long travel kits shouldn't cost as much as the newer style but... if you feel it's necessary to spend the extra amount on doing all that as a tibute to the golf cart gods, then by all means go with the new style steering.

No youre right.

The pre 2001 kits are cheaper. But add the price of a new rack or parts to repair my rack, its more than 2001 & up kit (and the 2001 & up kits include a rack).

As far as plasma cutting and welding, no prob here. Im willing to do a little fabrication. It sounds like what Id need to do is get a newer column shaft and change (cut/weld) the mounting area for the new style column on the floor. The rest is supplied with the 2001 & up kit.

But the question still remains. Is the 2001 and up steering better than the old style? Tighter? More durable?

OK, just got off the phone with stretch.

The old style is better!!!!!! New style lacks the turning radius because they tunned the rack to be less twitchy.

I know what im doing. They also suggested I buy a new complete rack.

They also said the Jakes kit is better IF you want height adjustability. Their kit is for hard offroading. Im going with Strech.

Hello, New to this site. Used to hang on a nother site, but I have grown tired of their commercial affliation. Enough said. I had a lot of slop in my steereing. We tightened the large nut all we could, but didn't help. Sound familiar.) I ordered brass shimming rings that were abou 2-1/2" I.D. and about .010 thick from McMaster-Carr. This worked great. The shims won't corrode etc. a,d brass will not bind. I had some left over incase I need them, I will have to look for them to see the size etc. and post that info. here.
