Buying new golf cart batteries
The Trojan batteries in my 97 DS are labeled "C4", which decodes to March, 2004. My cart has a runtime of 30 mins max before it begins to slow considerably and will shudder if the accellerator pedal is pressed more than half of its travel.
I assume this is due to old batteries and it's time to replace the pack as a whole? When purchasing new batteries, what is the maximum shelf life? I'm hoping to find a date code that is only a month or so, but I'm wondering how old would an unused battery be good? Also, I intend to take a digital volt meter and test each battery prior to purchase. What reading would be normal? How much difference in readings from one battery to the next is allowable? Since the batteries are one of the most expensive and most important components to the cart, I want to make certain I make the best decision when purchasing. Thanks for the help. |

Testing pre-purchase voltage would be useless. They are only charged when YOU charge them. Then, test the voltages. All batteries should be within .05v of each other. They have a guarantee. If you are serious about battery care, buy the Trojans again. If you do not maintain them well, buy the cheaper brands. |

Re: Buying new batteries
I bought the cart with Trojan T875 batteries in it. I intend to replace them with the same make/model, closely follow the break-in procedure, and then maintain them as well as possible.
So three months is about the limit on shelf life? I'll see what I can find... Anyone else care to share their comments? |

Re: Buying new batteries
Thanks Scotty. That's a great post concerning break-in on new batteries. I plan to follow Shadowman's procedure as he described.

Re: Buying new batteries
Buy Trojans! I can't imagine having a battery on the shelf for 1 month, let alone 3 months I guess we sell alot of batteries
A lot of smaller shops carry batteries on consignment. All battery suppliers will "freshen up" your supply, if you ask. We don't need it, but if you're out looking, make sure you see "H" or "I"... |

Re: Buying new batteries
Got my new batteries yesterday!!
Installed them and charged overnight. I resisted the urge to drive it before I charged them fully. Did a volt test of each battery and I get 8.50 to 8.53. Finally a nice new, fully charged, balanced battery pack! Raining at the moment - Can't wait till I get to test it out. So.... do I discharge the pack to 80% or 50% for the first 10-15 charging cycles? |
