Default How hot should a DC motor get?

I just bought this cart from a neighbor and have been expanding the battery capacity to 8 6 volters. 02 Club Car DS, no regen, stock controller, Advanced 6-223A motor (48V, 5.5 HP, 4700 RPMS). The motor says Fore-Par on it, but looking around _I think_ it is the 6-223A.

Doing some riding around to test range last week with 8-6v batteries and I noticed the motor was very hot after driving 45+ minutes. Very hot to me means that I could not put my hand on without thinking my hand would burn if I left it there. Thinking I was just a wimp I had my wife try also and she could not leave her hand on it either .

Thinking back, I do not remember that I have never felt a motor on ANY cart I owned, so I am not sure if this is normal for a motor to get this hot. The wires, controller, solenoid, batteries are NOT hot at all, just the motor.

It ran great (will push 25 on flats) and there was no visual sign of heat like smoke or anything.

Thoughts? Normal? Things to investigate if not?

Thanks

Not sure on golf cart but have dc motors at work that seem warm, when run 24-7. Have a meter that reads temp but sounds to me it is hotter than normal.

Sounds to me like it is getting tooo hot Are all of the cables going to it minimum #4g and connections all clean and tight? I had to ask

6-223A not E

I just finished the battery tray and was doing a test with batteries from my Par Car. All connections clean and tight. New batteries coming and shopping for good 4ga cables now, so the cables have not been upgraded yet.

AJ entering learning mode here, new at this so be gentle

So stock cables can make the motor hot? My assumption was that if the cables were undersized the cables them selves would offer resistance and get hot. Not the case I guess??

Just the opposite is true the larger the cables the less heat.
Do all #6 cables to #4 (or higher) not just the Battery cables.

On High speed motors you need to keep the speed up, these are not the best for offroading or just piddling around the neighborhood at low speed for extended times (45 min).
You can fry a motor which runs normally at 20-25 mph by running it continuously at 10-15 for long period of time especially if it is loaded.
Try the same run with the peddle to the metal and recheck ?

I was running her about 22 for most of the ride. No off road. Will be doing another test next day or so. I really am curious about the heat thing though....

I am NO electrical engineer, but the heat thing seems illogical to me. In my mind smaller wires would mean WIRES get hot when pushing same current. Aren't the smaller wires acting as resistance? To me they should get hot not the motor. I am not doubting what folks are saying, just trying to learn.

Can anyone explain why the motor gets hot not the wires and why larger wires would cool the motor?

Thanks for helping me understand...

If the motor is being starved for voltage or Current it will over heat,
while larger wires may not solve the problem it will help.
Search for overheat,
http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/ph/p/id/54

They say to send it back if it continues.
