Clarification on part of "Sticky" above
Need some help please. This is the part of the sticky above that I would like help with. (Charging your batteries
Charge the batteries daily after each use. If you play golf; charge between rounds if possible.) To help you help me I thought it might be easiest for me to describe a typical day of my use of my cart. 1.Take cart on 10 minute ride to tennis courts. The cart will now sit for about 2 hours. 2.After tennis take cart on another 10 minute ride to our activity center. The cart will sit for about another hour. 3. After activity center then take cart back home which would be about another 10 minutes. 4. At this time I would generally plug cart into charger. I would leave on charger until complete. 5. Maybe several hours later I might decide to run over to a friends house which could take 10 to 15 minutes and the cart might sit for several hours. Then I would return to my house and plug cart back into charger for the night. 6. The next day this routine would be played out in a similar way. Now to my Questions: 1. From the sticky above"Charge the batteries daily after each use" Would this sticky statement refer to my type of use of the cart? Right now I charge the cart at least twice a day but I know the batteries have plenty of life in them to get me through the whole day. 2. What I am looking for is what will be best for the long term of the cart and batteries. In conclusion: If you have read my earlier post this is my first cart project and I am very happy with it so far. I will also have to say thank you to this forum for helping me directly and with all the old post I have read. Phil PS: One other quick question please. Does it hurt to unplug from charger before completely charged. I have a 1995CC DS 48 volt cart with Power Drive charge system. Almost everything is new. Batteries, 4ga wiring, switches, motor ect. |

Re: Clarification on part of "Sticky" above
Phil, the duty cycle you described warrants an overnight charge, no more than that. And yes, let the charger finish, this helps balance the pack. When the sticky mentions "charge your cart after 15 minutes of pedal time" what it really means is 15 minutes MINIMUM. In other words, don't charge the cart UNLESS you have used it for at least 15 minutes of pedal time. Do you understand the distinction here?

Re: Clarification on part of "Sticky" above
I dont see any sign of you playing golf so you dont have the stop and go and carrying golf clubs and beer plus a possible HD passenger or passengers, and if most of this travel with cart is on flat pavement I would just plug in cart at end of your day and let it charge up overnight. If this amounts to climbing hills and or gravel road etc with heavy loads, with larger diameter tires and possible lift kit and rear seat it would be a good idea to add a battery meter so you can monitor use and deside if more charging is needed? Remember you should never get below 70-75% charge before recharging.
With your type of charger unhooking makes the OBC make charger start all over again through its cycle and maintain charge and for that matter any charger should be allowed to fully charge batterys before unhooking. I know this could happen sometimes but shouldnt be often? |

Re: Clarification on part of "Sticky" above
i have no clue, as i haven't had a sparky (phew!) *smiling at Gorno*
anyway, do these chargers drain the battery before recharging, like some other rechargeable items? the reason i ask, is if you plug it in, then half an hour later decide to take off again, would you be disrupting the unloading phase of the charge cycle? just curious. my little brother has an ezgo 3-wheel sparky i'm thinking of pulling out of the weeds |

No, they do not discharge the pack. The modern chargers read the pack voltage and decide what to do and how long to run.

Re: Clarification on part of "Sticky" above
Great. Thanks that was the answer I was hoping for.
I think I will order a battery meter to make sure I do not drop down below 75%. A question about the meters I have seen on sponsors site. They show a red and green area on meter but how do you know the actual percentage? Are they accurate enough so if the line is halfway into the green area it would be at 50% or do you just do your own testing with a meter on the battery pack after you have ran the cart for a while and then determine where the line should be at 75%? I have read quite a few posts on meters but any current suggestions on a preferred meter. Thanks Phil |
