Default Choke has to be 1/2 way out to run....

Choke has to be 1/2 way out to run....1997 Yamaha Gas. I can only get it to run if choke is pulled out half way, and it will backfire a bit before it smooths out. I have put in new gas, and changed the plug.

Thanks for any help...could it be the airbox seal?

Yes it could be and it could be the carb needs disassembling and cleaning.

Is there a filter inside the carb...or just the float assembly in the bowl ?

No filter but there are some very small jets that must be removed and cleaned.

Too little fuel for whatever reason. Jets or filters or some restriction or a weak pump, either way, you can't get too much air to it to cause this condition, has to be too lean on fuel. Additionally, you shouldn't run it that way because even with the choke out, the mixture could still be way too lean which causes the combustion cycle to be real hot, could melt something...
