Default First Cart- Yamaha G19, want to convert to GAS???

I just picked up a 2002 Yamaha G19 48V Electric Golf Cart from work. Already lifted and in MINT condition. The motor is seized and the cart sat for 2 years in a covered garage. My price was FREE. I want to convert over to gas for the main reason that I want to take the kids out on the weekends camping and trail ride without the hassles of bringing the generator along and all that comes with electric carts. Just gas and go!

Everything works, rolls and functions as it should, but the motor...

Looking at the cart... could I simply machine a sprocket for the rear differential, mount a motor with clutch system, chain drive and fabricate gas linkage? Or could I belt drive, which is better? I understand that nothing is "simple" lol ... I know that I will be giving up reverse by going gas and that is fine. I am highly mechanically inclined, but have never worked on a golf cart. Sine my initial investment is nothing into an basically new golf cart I don't mind spending some money, sweat and busted knuckles to convert this cart over. Any ideas, links and how-to's re greatly appreciated!

What motor?
Will the stock differential take the higher torque/speeds of a gas motor?

If you just wanted to, I am sure you could look around the forum, and there are lots of sprocket to diff mods that have been done.

Most of the big bike motors put in carts have a sprocket mod of some sort.

If it was me, knowing how valuable reverse is in the trails...I couldn't function without it, or I would have to get out two or three times an hour and have to pull my cart back by hand to reposition it, and my cart is a ST 350 and heavy just me alone I wouldn't take it out unless I planned on staying on or in an area there was NO chance I would have to reposition it.

Anyway, if I was going to convert an electric to gas, I would get a rear end, that had the brakes and everything, then use a big block motor kit engine cradle from Tom's one of the sponsors (yes I can make one, and I actually know what it has to look like, I have made them, bought ones that were home made, and bought two from tom) they are drop in no issues..and cheap as compared to alternatives, and then put whatever horizontal shaft motor you have.

In fact instead of going with a used rear end they actually have dana spicer transaxles for sale on the web that have posi track and an output shaft for under 4 bills.

If you go with a gasser rear, like you should, and either build a motor mount or buy one, then you have to acquire an engine, the first one I did was a vtwin briggs, there are lost of small block mods done on here, an entire clone forum on here that details every possible problem you might run into.

some people have those rears for free, the average price for a decent one is going to be a c note. then the mount is about a c note, then you have the engine, and clutch to contend with and a modified accelerator of some sort.

Good luck !

Ps My first "build" took this ol po boy almost two years.

Thanks for the reply!

I was thinking about going with something like a 13-20HP motor. I'm not looking for kill myself speed. Something that has the torque for the trails and the top end for when I wan to just cruise the neighborhood.

You are right about the reverse, didn't think that one through! I was looking for "Toms" link on the sponsor page, but didn't see it. is it under another name? Send me the link if you have, please...

So basically I need to decide what axle/diff I need. I would certainly need reverse. Any suggestions on what model or who to buy from...

Also I am certain on the torque/belt drive if I can get a motor/axle sealed unit. Had a four wheeler with that setup.. non-stop slippage in the mud.

Another option I was pondering was taking my Suzuki 500 four wheeler and integrating that into the cart, motor/trans/axle... It's a five speed and might be more of a hassle to shift though.

I've searched but can't find many Yamaha G19 conversion to gas topics around, a lot of EZ and Club...

One thing that is going to help $ is that a buddy of mine is splitting the cost with me so that he can use too... I get to do all the wrenching, but I enjoy it.

I'd consider finding a G16A (gas) and swapping the parts over, then selling the 19. Everything will fit.

awesome!

I'm currently searching for a rear end....
Looking at: www.surpluscenter.com

Anyone familiar with this site? Any of the axles would work for my cart? Like I said I'm a virgin to this Cart project.. Done a lot of 4x4/Diesel, but never a Cart..

No luck finding a gas Yamaha cart locally... So that seems to be a wasted idea for right now.... Any suggestions for a rear end I can buy aftermarket from either surplus or an ATV, other golf cart that would either bolt up with little garage doable modifications??

Brett, you do what you want, but I'd sell the 19 and buy a gas cart of what ever kind you can find. Converting yours will be expensive to do, and not generate much resale value unless its done first class.

Good luck!

Mile is right sell what you have and search around Craigslist and sooner or later a good deal will come about even it if takes a 100 mile road trip to get it.
