Default 2005 club car backfiring

Hello everyone. I just purchased a used 2005 gas club car and have issues with an occasional backfire while decelerating. The previous short term owner had it for only 2 weeks..Most likely bought it to flip it for a few extra bucks . while under his ownership he told me he adjusted the cart to go faster, which leads me to believe the adjustment was not properly done. What I'd like to know is where to start first? My thought is the governor cable is to tight leaving the throttle open to long. It also does smell like its burning rich...TIA for the help

I'd start with the governor and carb settings and system check from there. Likely it's got too much gas it's not burning all of it and the hot muffler is finishing the job on the unburnt gas on deceleration. If you have access to a manual, get it back to stock settings. You're probably right about it not being done right. once carb and governor are back in spec if it's still doing it I'd go after carb cleaning, fresh gas, and likely a valve lash check/adjustment. There's only so much overrevving these things will take before their lives get short.

If he messed with the governor make sure the governor arm is not pulling against the throttle cable when at pedal up position. There should be substantial play in the throttle cable at the rest position.
Next would be to make sure the cable is not damaged or sticking and holding the throttle butterfly partially open.

A cleaning of the carb can do wonders. Another possibility is that it’s a replacement aftermarket carb and those can be problematic.

just an FYI... The adjustment was done on the governor shaft...put it back to factory specks. No more backfiring but runs alot slower now

It was 'backfiring' because it was hitting the rev limiter
