86 Ezgo Marathon Gas Won't Crank
I put this in Electrical first by mistake .
1986 Marathon Gas. Ran fine then starter would start out turning slow then build up speed and it would run. Then all of a sudden after I stop for a minute it would not turn over. If I tapped the start solenoid lightly it would start to turn over and start. I replaced the solenoid with a new 12 V one for a Ford. It increased the cranking speed greatly. But after I drive it a short distance and stop it won’t go again. Now tapping the solenoid doesn not help. Regulator is new, Battery New, Starter Solenoid New, Accelerator Micro Switch New. Thanks for any help, Jon |

Re: 86 Ezgo Marathon Gas Won't Crank
Just to add to Jons post the solenoid on these cart are a continous duty designed to be energized for long periods of time.
The "ford" type solenoids are designed to start engines and then turn off. They will not hold up. They are also externally grounded through the mounting bracket and activate with one small post, the one with two small posts are not positive and ground posts. Testing your solenoid: Disconnect both small wires from your solenoid and run two jumper wires from the battery pos/neg to them, doesn't matter which post get pos or neg because it is not externally grounded. If it spins over you have an issue other than the solenoid. |

Re: 86 Ezgo Marathon Gas Won't Crank
Welcome young man,
Also check all of your battery cables for corrosion, both pos and neg and both ends, Corroded cables or ends will show 12V with a meter but the corrosion will choke the amps down to cause this problem. How are the brushes in the starter/gen? |

Re: 86 Ezgo Marathon Gas Won't Crank
Forgot the Starter/Gen is new also I just put a new battery in this year so I cleaned the posts. I have another cart that I rob Peter to pay Paul took the Solenoid off of it and that seem to cure the problem. I will purchase a new Solenoid soon as I figure which one to buy. I guessing that it is the one that looks like the one I have now. There are 2 solenoids listed the one does not look like the one I have. And naturally the one I need costs more.
Thanks for the helpI didn't know that about the differance in Solenoids. Jon |
