Stuck armature
This is on a series motor GE model 5BC58JBS6132A. Cart was not working and testing revealed problems with the motor.
Tried to remove the motor and was not able. Did manage to remove the case (stator) and found that the brushes had cratered. Other than that it all looks OK and I think is worth trying to save. Now for the hard part. Trying lots of penetrating oil and working the armature, I cannot get it to come off. I know that this has been adressed in numerous posts but none of those suggestions seem to work and I dont want to destroy the armature to remove it. I was thinking that perhaps I could attach a bearing puller hammer to the bearing on the open end. Would this help break the splined coupling loose or would I just damage the bearing (it also appears to be in good condition) Any other suggestion appreciated. |

Re: Stuck armature
Is the axle out of the cart? If so, have you seen the procedure the guys in the Club Car section use?

Re: Stuck armature
No, axle is still in cart and would like not have to remove it.

Re: Stuck armature
I've seen the youtube method of dropping the whole axle. That would be the last resort.

The armature will spin 12.5 time to each tire revolution and the armature will go flying shortly after a wobble develops. Problem is the armature will most likely be destroyed when it lands. I got my thoroughly stuck PDS motor off that way. The armature had exploded and was seized in the case, so it was junk anyway. |

Re: Stuck armature
I'm no cart expert so I don't have any good tricks from past experience and my similar GE motor managed to come off pretty easily a couple months ago with just oil. My only tip would be when I see penetrating oil being mentioned I always highly suggest Kroil if your not already using it. In my experience if after a few days of repeatedly soaking something in Kroil it won't come off it needs to be broken or cut off. Best penetrating oil ever.

Re: Stuck armature
If everything else is good and you just need brushes then raise one wheel up and rotate it to spin the armature and just clean up the commutator with a fine file then 400 grit Emory cloth.
Reassemble and happy times for the next twenty years. |

Re: Stuck armature
Had a the same issue a few years ago with armature only still stuck. Finally hit the end of the shaft with a good hammer to drive it on further and then it came right off. Give that a try if you haven't already. Otherwise, use axle remove and drop method suggested.

Re: Stuck armature and succesful removal
Finally had success in removing the armature. What worked for me was to clamp on two ropes around the armature and then attach a slide hammer to the ropes. Help from a strong young person to bang the slid hammer and it came off.
The splines on both the shaft and coupler were in good condition just gumed up with rust. Cleaned up they look OK. Now need to turn down the commutator on the neighbors lathe. |
