Steering Gear Box (83)
1) I have the later 83 model club car (uses same parts as 84+) and need to buy a new steering gear box (this one is grinding) but everyone that sells them says they are for the 84+.. I know alot of sellers list everythins as 84+ because they dont want to mess with selling the customer the wrong parts should it be an early 83 model. With that being said, my gear box doesnt look anything like the ones being sold so did they change that in 84 or late 83 like everything else?
2) Also, is there a trick to getting the gear box off? Do I need a wheel puller or something? 3) If I have a bolt that is stuck in a hole, which one do you heat? 25 years ago I worked in a die shop and we used to put parts in the freezer to get them to fit because the tolerances were so tight but I dont remember which one (male or female). Thanks Cuz |

Re: Steering Gear Box (83)
Early carts had a steering GEAR BOX.
'84 & up carts had Rack & pnion steering. this is a horizontal unit connected to the steering shaft with a Universal type joint. If you have this type a new OEM lists for about $230. Used one should be avail. Here is a pic of a post 84 steering gear box. Also heat one part to expand and freeze the other to contract. Works well for pressed bearings and such |

Thanks Scotty,
I just snapped a phot of mine, which is different. Do you know where I can get a replacement like this? Or is it possible to adapt over to a rack & pinion without to much hassle? Thanks Cuz |

Re: Steering Gear Box (83)
yeah, that looks like a pretty big deal to me.... The mounting plates are different and the steer arm connection is different and the column connnection is different. Yeah too much BIG DIFF IMO...
If you had a doner cart.....everything needed may bolt on. Nice pic! Nice to finally have side by side comparison photos! So many questions about the difference in the models. What is the new front end on your cart? |

Re: Steering Gear Box (83)
Its a cheap 6" spindle/block lift kit.. It was a package combo with the tires and lift. There are some easy things they could of done to make it alot better. The directions blew and I think the average person would have a very difficult time trying to figure them out. I already gave the company a piece of my mind about it. Cuz |

Re: Steering Gear Box (83)
what you need to change over is a newer delta tower(part taht shocks bolt to) that has a mount for a newer rack on it. then you need the rack itself and a newer steering column.
I also remember hearing that you need to drill 2 holes or something like that in the frame. You might want to post a wanted add if you need these things. I had them at one time from a cart that i stripped but have since sold mine. they are out there. -Aaron |

Re: Steering Gear Box (83)
BTW scotty you can get a bit more travel from yours from trimming off the lower rubbers on your shocks if you haven't already done so.
