Why Not 3 12 volt batteries ???

Just wondering why nobody seems to use 3 12 volt batteries instead of 6 6 volt batteries for a 36 volt cart.. It would seem to be a lot lighter and if I purchased deep cycle wouldn't they last about as long ?? I am a newb at the electric carts so please inform me !!!

Range is the reason. the 12V batteries will be much lower Amp Hour Rated if they are lighter. Four 12V is fairly common in 48V carts but they offer reduced range over Six 8V batteries.

So even with deep cycle batteries ? How much would this impact the travel time ??

so much that you will wish you would have bought the cheapest 6 volt batteries available.

This is a pretty common question, and understandably so. The main thing is to realize that there are differences between deep cycle batteries and deep cycle GOLF CART batteries, the latter being what you want as they are the only ones designed to handle the rigorous discharge and recharge cycles a cart puts them through. Golf cart batteries come in 6, 8, and 12 volt. The more lead (more batteries) the greater the range. Club Car was using 4 12 volts in their 48 volt carts, but the range and overall lifespan was poor, so they switched back to 6 8 volts. Even with 12 volt golf cart batteries, 3 of them hooked up to make a 36 volt system would compound the problem of range and longevity, not to mention they are freakin huge and would be hard to get situated in a battery rack designed for standard 6 volts. Yes, it is expensive, but truly your best bet is to go with 6 6 volt batteries to make a 36 volt pack.
