Default centrifugal clutch question

Hello all. I have a question about the centrifigual clutch and belt sizes on the early model g series golf carts. The belt size that I am using is about 1.25 inches in width. When the clutch is fully engaged, the belt rides at the top of the clutch making it about a 6" pulley. My question is, If I used a smaller width belt, the belt would ride lower in the clutch and become a smaller drive pulley. Would this be a problem. Would this cause the smaller belt to slip or break?

Thanks for your help!

The OEM Yamaha belt is 1 3/16" wide. Not sure what you're trying to accomplish.

I'd stick with an appropriate belt at 1-3/16" a narrower belt will sit down further in the secondary on starts and when the belt sits further down the secondary it is essentially a second gear start 1" wide is considered a worn out belt witch doesn't seam like a lot from 1-3/16" but it is

I guess I should have been more clear with my question. I am repurposing this clutch to engage a band sawmill. I want the belt to ride farther down in the clutch to give me a lower diameter drive Pulley. My concern is the belt slipping or breaking. Are the belts for golf carts considered “v belts”? They have the same type taper that a v belt has.

Thanks!

thanks for replys guys. think we need to elaborate a litte more. We are using the clutch off golf cart to drive a pulley that will then turn a bandwheel to run a saw mill. When the clutch is a wot with a 1 1/4 " belt it makes the clutch(pulley) 6". When we put a 1/2" belt on, the clutch tightens down on belt and runs at about 3". Thats what we are shooting for. 3". Question is will belt slip running 1/2 way up clutch. We did it by holding a pulley on a shaft and running motor to turn clutch and had no problems. Dont know if under a load it will slip or break.

I don't think it will hurt anything in the short term, but may wear grooves in the pullies over time. Don't know if that would ever cause you problems. I say "go for it".

You should be able to use a different width to do what you want, you might also spacer in the clutch to fix it at that size you want. I have used drill presses that had a CV in the top with a handle that turned to select rpm. They must have used a bearing to hold it in a particular postion, they could be moved while running and changed rpm. IIRC they use a spring in the secondary for take up and the primary position is fixed to the handle that controlled rpm.
