Ignition trouble 295 Robin
First, a little background.
-New to me, I've never seen it run. -Cart was wired for key start. -I checked for spark and it was there. Took a break before moving on to carb cleaning...... got sidetracked. -I left it "on" and cooked the coil. (busted case, plastic oozing out) -Ordered used coil, installed coil, no spark on plugs. -Check with test light on - side of coil, flashes when cranking. Voltage good at + side of coil when cranking. -Contacted coil seller and got another coil, no spark at plugs, - terminal of coil flashes when cranking, voltage still good on + terminal. -Hooked up automotive coil, same way as EZGO coil, and it will "run" (1 cylinder) ------------------------------------- I bench tested both EZGO coils by applying power and ground; when I break the circuit, the longest arc I can get with a spark tester is about .050"(irregular). To get a regular, yet still thin, spark, I've got to close it down to about .020". (auto coil will go about .250" before getting irregular) Now, "bad coil" is really coming to the top of the list right now but I wanted to check here first. The chances of getting 2 bad coils from a reputable seller that are "bad" in exactly the same odd way has the needle on my WTF meter bouncing around pretty good. In my years in the auto and small engine field, coils either worked or didn't. --------------------------------------------------------- Is this a common fail mode on these coils? Will a stock EZGO coil create a solid, fat, .040" arc on a bench test and stretch out to at least .200"? I'm not sure if there is any "magic" that happens in the ignitor besides it simply flashing a ground to the coil and advancing at the appropriate curve? Will the ignitor handle a auto coil at about 1 ohm; or is that the fast track to buying an ignitor? If the EZGO module won't handle the auto coil; is there a ignition module from the auto world that I can use to run one of the commonly available GM twin tower coils? I stopped by the local dealer and didn't get much help there. They were holding their cards pretty close. The guy seemed like the "diagnosis by replacement" type..... I don't have the luxury of throwing parts 'till it starts working. |
