Default Do I need a gasket to seal the electric motor

I just pulled the motor from my '02 EZGO PDS. It was full of dirt, and so was the inside of the housing on the cart. It did contain some oily substance as well.
It is normal for there to be some oil there? Did it leak through the seal on the shaft coming from the differential?
I cleaned it out and plan to install a new motor, but I was wondering whether I need a gasket/RTV seal between the motor and the housing to keep the inside clean.
I'm pretty sure that the rear axle oil has never been changed, so I'll get to that as well.

Any suggestions?

No gasket used or needed, and if you look closely at the mating surfaces you will see that one wouldn't work anyway as there is a gap between the motor and the diff housing in one area. Dirt in there is normal, and so is a bit of oil. If the oil is leaking down onto the diff (visibly) then there may be a seal leak, but it is not common.
