Default forward and reverse lever question

I was wondering if there is a way to adjust the cables that switch it from forward to reverse. I have a g16 gas 1999 with a big block kit in it and I have a sport shifter from jakes. When I go to shift from F to R it barely goes in gear. Sometimes it gets stuck in reverse.I have to sometimes hold it with all I got to use reverse sometimes. Just wondered if I should elongate the slot on the shifter plate thats on the top of the thing. Any suggestions would be helpful.Thanks.

Both "push/pull" f/r cable have adjustment nuts and lock nuts you can play with. Also make shure the holes the clevis pins go thru (on the shifter cam are not elongated. All it takes is one cable that is "sticking" to not alow smooth f/r shifting.
