I have read about this on here before. I believe the cause is broken engine mounts.

When I had the motor out I checked the mounts out but could be broke now will check have been running it hard. Have heard of putting springs on the header to muffler connection.

Look near the bottom of the engine to see if there are any cracks. If so, it will allow a ton of vibration to stress the exhaust stack and it will crack. When I had my 89 it did the same thing. I ended up laying in some round stock and welding it up to stop the cracks at the bottom of the engine mount.
